Research has shown that children make their best progress in reading when they: 1. read books that interest them, 2. select books that are easy to read independently and 3. have lots of time to read!
Each month, students are given an 'Independent Reading Level' as a guide to picking books that are just right for them. They use the reading strategies learned in class as they read and respond to the books they have chosen. Through a combination of book reports, Accelerated Reader tests and Book Talks, students show their growth and understanding.
A reading grade is given each month based on the log each student keeps in his/her Book Binder.
